CIT Training

What is CIT?

​

CIT Training course is comprised around four key themes: Increased Understanding of Behavioral Health, Effective Communication and engagement skills, Verbal De-escalation, and Navigating Community Resources. Officers who have completed this training learn to understand commons signs and symptoms of mental illness and recognize them in crisis situations. They are also equipped with the knowledge and skills to guide best practice response to individuals impacted by psychiatric illness, developmental disorders, and co-occurring substance use disorders.

 

 A Certified CIT officer completes 32 hours of training covering a variety of topics including:

¨ Recognizing symptoms of psychiatric and substance use disorders.

¨ Practical de-escalation techniques to increase officer safety.

¨ Special topics including Autism and trauma in children.

¨ Legal cases related to mental health and substance abuse.

¨ PTSD and suicide in the ranks.

¨ Live role playing techniques

CIT is a Safety Course that gives you more tools to safely and effectively de-escalate a crisis situation.

CIT also:

¨ Improves crisis response to an altered mental health status call

¨ Reduces arrests and use of force

¨ Reduces officer/citizen injuries

¨ Reduces liability

¨ Cost savings by more efficient use of criminal justice and community resources.

All participants will be trained in QPR and using the C-SSRS.
